  • Program/Department Description

    San Diego Center for Change program is a court-supervised, comprehensive treatment program that provides services to non-violent drug offenders referred by probation and parole.   This is a voluntary program which includes regular court appearances before the Drug Court Judge. Treatment includes drug testing, individual and group counseling, and regular attendance at self-help meetings. San Diego Center for Change program is gender responsive and culturally sensitive, and offers services for clients with co-occurring disorders.

    Position Description

    This position provides substance abuse counseling, case management and education services. Counselors interact with participants on a day-to-day basis providing individual and group counseling and education, as well as engaging in rehabilitation activities from time-to-time. Counselors provide substance abuse recovery skills and information and leadership necessary to provide participants with the ability to recover from substance abuse addiction.

    • Provides community outreach and early intervention activities by supplying information about the program to community agencies connected to the AOD services system in order to educate them about program availability.
    • Maintains a caseload as prescribed by the Program Manager. Delivers substance abuse treatment to participants by providing a variety of interventions including individual and group therapy, twelve-step methodology, and other relevant sobriety-related services.
    • Works directly with the participant to provide orientation to the treatment program and the concept of sobriety.
    • Provides counseling and recovery services, information and education, vocational training, and relapse prevention.
    • Develops and maintains a caseload as prescribed by the Program Manager.
    • Develops community resources for continued community treatment.

    Education/Experience Requirements



    Recovery Advocate must meet one of the following:

    • Certification through a recognized alcohol and drug certification entity; or
    • Actively working toward a recognized alcohol and drug certification plus two years’ experience working with alcohol and drug related issues/addictions; or
    • A high school diploma, GED, or the equivalent, and experience working with substance abusers.


    • Transference and counter-transference.
    • The concept of co-dependent behavior.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of abusive behavior.
    • Substance-abuse programs and treatment, relapse prevention, 12-Step programs and a knowledge of cognitive therapy techniques.


    • Recognize mood changes or signs of behavior that indicate relapse.
    • Distinguish and discuss appropriate group behavior with participants.
    • Encourage participant involvement in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
    • Work with other programs to assure availability of space for participant care, facility-wide.
    • Create written documentation that is legible, clear, and concise.
