  • Program/Department Description

    Our Kern ACTion program serves individuals with serious and persistent mental illness with severe functional impairments, who have avoided or not responded well to traditional outpatient mental health care and psychiatric rehabilitation services. Many of these individuals will have co-existing problems such as substance use disorders, homelessness or involvement in the criminal justice system. All clients of ACTion are eligible to receive medication management and monitoring, therapy, drug and alcohol counseling, case management, vocational rehabilitation, peer counseling and support, and housing services.

    Position Description

    The Therapist is responsible for delivery of a full range of clinically related services including individual therapy, counseling, crisis intervention, collateral services, case management brokerage, family and group therapy. Therapist will review client charts to assure accuracy and timeliness of charting.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Assures clients are informed of inappropriate behavior. Initiates appropriate and timely interventions. 
    • Integrates clinical concepts with sound theoretical and practical applications of rehabilitative and individual group and milieu counseling principles. 
    • Interacts therapeutically with clients. 
    • Provides input to other treatment team members to develop and improve program services and delivery and individual client services. 
    • Maintains a clinical caseload as prescribed by the Program Manager. 
    • Provides symptom management skills and information and the leadership necessary to provide clients with the ability to maintain the least restrictive care and the highest level of functioning. 
    • Maintains timely, accurate and legible documentation using assigned forms and formats for each client in their caseload. Responsible for medical record documentation using assigned forms and formats for each client in their caseload per contract and MediCal requirements. 
    • Consults with attending psychiatrist regarding medication and treatment issues. 
    • Consults with other treatment providers such as conservator, case manager, social worker, probation officers, etc. 
    • Designates new target goals for clients consistent with overall treatment goals. 
    • Attends treatment meetings, conferences, study teams, IEP, or any related meeting to discuss treatment goals. 
    • Assesses and recognizes behavior or changes in mood that indicates suicidal or homicidal intent or plan, and immediately reports any concerns to Program Manager. 
    • Provide clinical or administrative supervision to other staff, volunteers or interns as assigned by Program Manager. 
    • Schedules and designs recreational, skills building activities as needed. 
    • Communicates professionally with all other professionals, community contacts, school personnel. 

    Education/Experience Requirements

    • M.A. /M.S. degree in Psychology, Counseling or related field.
    • Two years mental health experience working in the Mental Health field, including clinical experience on a cross-disciplinary team.
